Houston Hospice

What We Do

Our mission is to provide uncompromising, compassionate, end-of-life care to patients and families across our 13-county service area.

We are here to bring comfort during a caring journey for your loved one and you. We know it is not easy and that’s why we are here. What elevates our care is an interdisciplinary team focused on caring for the patient and the family.  Specialized hospice physicians, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, grief counselors, volunteers, and chaplains are available 24/7 by calling 713-468-2441.

Being there for the patient and family is our top priority. Hospice care focuses on quality of life. The core of what we do is centered around comfort care for the patient.

Comfort Care

Comfort Care is available for months

Hospice comfort care is not just for ‘final days’ but is available for six months or more as needed. Familiar surroundings enhance comfort, so every effort is made to help the patient stay wherever he/she calls home – be it an apartment, a house, an assisted living facility, a skilled nursing home, etc. If inpatient care is needed, Houston Hospice provides services at its Margaret Cullen Marshall Hospice Care Center at the Texas Medical Center.

Indications that hospice care may be appropriate:
  • Frequent hospitalizations
  • Decline in functional status
  • Uncontrolled or increased pain
  • Increased mental impairment
  • Involuntary weight loss
  • Recurring infections
  • Increased difficulty breathing
  • Incontinence
  • Frequent falls
  • Disease progression

Houston Hospice Inpatient Unit

The Margaret Cullen Marshall Hospice Care Center, in the largest medical center in the world, is home to Houston Hospice. Located at 1905 Holcombe Boulevard between S. Braeswood and Cambridge, the hospice care center backs up to the Braes Bayou. Our inpatient unit in the hospice care center serves patients and families when symptoms are too acute to manage at home. A warm, welcoming friendly feeling flourishes throughout three floors with 33 large and comfortable inpatient rooms with round-the-clock, expert medical care. Quiet family rooms, a chapel with a soaring ceiling and lush gardens provide comforting spaces and places while being with a loved one in our care. The inpatient unit is connected to the historic Holcombe Mansion, former home of Houston Mayor Oscar Holcombe.

Pediatric Care

Our Butterfly Program provides palliative comfort care for children with life-limiting conditions who are aged 18 and younger. The program advocates for the needs of the infant, child or adolescent and supports the child’s family. Also included are perinatal services of education, advocacy, care coordination and emotional support for couples whose unborn child has been diagnosed with a terminal condition. The Butterfly Team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, nurses aides and trained volunteers.

In-Home Care

We serve a ten-county area including Austin, Brazoria, Colorado, Fort Bend, Harris, Jackson, Matagorda, Montgomery, Waller and Wharton Counties. Patients and their families can access care teams of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, hospice aides and trained volunteers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Care is provided in-home and in residential facilities.

Veterans Care

There are more than 21 million Veterans living in America today. Our Veterans have done everything asked of them in their mission to serve our country. We believe it is never too late to give them a hero’s welcome. We pay tribute and recognize Veteran’s service through our We Honor Veterans program. Launched by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), We Honor Veterans improves care Veterans receive from hospice and palliative care partners. In 2018, We Honor Veterans recognized Houston Hospice as a Level Four partner, its highest level at the time.

Bereavement Support

Houston Hospice believes that “if it’s mentionable, it’s manageable” (Doug Manning). Grief support groups are one way to manage grief. We are committed to offering support groups to help the patient’s family and friends cope with grief and loss issues. We offer four kinds of support groups.

In-Person Support Groups (Temporarily postponed due to COVID-19)

Facilitated by Houston Hospice staff and volunteers, these groups are open format and provide on-going support during the grief process. Registration is not required and open to adults who have experienced loss by death.

Life after Loss Support Group

Life After Loss is a six-week grief support and educational series designed to help people understand the process of grief, assess where they are in the process, and plan for how they will continue to heal.

An Empty Place at the Table

A two-hour grief seminar to assist the bereaved with creating a meaningful plan to address the holiday season after the death of a loved one. This group is educational and there is some time for processing, but its focus is to provide the family members the tools needed to create a new way to acknowledge the holidays during November, December and New Years.

Community Engagement

Throughout the year, we’re actively involved in the community where we present and share hospice information to groups, from seniors, churches, cultural organizations to social workers and case managers.

We educate audiences on how hospice works with a Hospice 101 presentation. Other educational programs we offer include topics on Advance Directives, Grief and Loss, and Care of the Caregiver.
